Section IV run on this past Friday, the 10th. Level was like 1.7 i think. Was just Michael and I. Put on around 3:30 or 4. Water was pretty darn cold. We pretty much bombed the five falls in around 5 minutes. I hit handkerchief and was thrown around in the hole at the dog until i was forced to pull.

Fluid Big Bang

I just picked up a new Fluid Big Bang, and want to share it here. I've been paddling the Solo L for over 2 years, and really love the boat. The Big Bang is a new expedition creek boat built off the Solo platform, but stretched and softened a bit. Here are some shots of the Solo L beside the Big Bang. The Big Bang is yellow, and the Solo L is Lime.

I just picked up a new big bang, and am very glad I did. First off, I'm 5'9", about 225 lbs, and have been boating a Solo L for more than 2 years. I've had the boat down the green river three times.

The boat is a bit heavier than the solo, just more plastic I guess. I've always had trouble fitting in to most boats outfitting comfortably, including the Fluid's, so I have to do a good bit of work making my self comfy in it. I like to sit low in the boats, so like the Solo, I removed the seat padding to lower me 1/2" down.

The boat is extremely fast, and still maneuverable. It keeps me very high on the water. It is a very nimble boat, but not as nimble as the Solo L. That's the trade off for the speed. The solo is extremely nimble, but no where near as fast. I've decided that I'll still boat the Solo on runs like big creek and other tight runs, and use the big bang for runs like the green, overflow, etc. The boat goes over holes with ease, without worries. The boofs are just silly, the speed and the Solo shaped hull are a perfect combination for those sikk boofs out there. The Big Bang has a great amount of secondary stability, which is something I can't really say about the solo. I'm really having a great time with the boat so far, and as I continue to tweak the outfitting, it will only get better.

When I first set it up before having it on the water, I put the seat in a neutral position, and ended up moving is as far back as possible within the first 1/2 mile of river. Just like the grande jefe, it wants to be driven on the stern, so the bow stays up. The bow rocker is just like the Solo, but the stern rocker is totally different. It starts under the seat, and slowly works its way to the back. The edge on the Big Bang is pretty much identical to that of the Solo, but tapers off at the bow and stern. A perfect combination in my opinion.

The stern has great volume in it, and a beer cooler ;). The hatch set up is something I'm not too familiar with, but seems like a great thing. The boat comes with a neoprene skirt that covers the hatch, along with the plastic form cover. There are 2 drainplugs on the boat, one on the back, and one on the left side just behind the seat. The hatch is separated from the rest of the boat with a 2" bulkhead glued in place. My Watershed Ocoee drybag fits behind the seat, so you don't have to crack the hatch open all the time. This allows you to keep the weight of your drybag close to you.

Overall, I love this boat, and can't wait to use it for overnighters and such. If you like the Solo L, but want more speed and secondary stability, have no fear, the big bang is here!

[HD] West Fork of the Pigeon River

A group of us rallied over to the balsams after a nice rain, and when most folks went to the Big East Fork, we stayed north of the ridge, and got on the West Fork. Putting on just about 1/2 mile downstream of the large culvert bridge, and taking out just upstream of the confluence with Middle Prong, we boofed our way down this awesome little creek. With all the rain coming in, lot's of things were high. The West Fork of the Pigeon River is a really nice run coming down from the parkway, and towards Lake Logan. Here is a short clip of Hunter Davis running the first big rapid on the run called "Haywood County Detention Center".

Waking up sunday am to see some gauges in the green. A quick call, and I was enroute to Asheville to ride down to Overflow. I'd run overflow one other time, about three years ago, and it was about the same gauge reading at the take out. .9 on pillar, but they obviously mean different things now..less water. So it's a bit on the low side, but we kayak anyhow. Here is an account of some boofs that were had. The camera was put away after the scout at Marginal Monster, so no footage of that was had, but enjoy what's here!
